Three Polish scientists have won prestigious European Molecular Biology Organization grants to set up research laboratories.

Dr. Kinga Kamieniarz-Gdula, Dr. Michał Wandel and Dr. Piotr Gerlach were awarded 50,000 euros per year for three to five years and can apply for further funding of up to 10,000 euros per year.

Dr. Wandel will set up a laboratory at the Institute of Biochemistry and Biophysics of the Polish Academy of Sciences in Warsaw; Dr. Kamieniarz-Gdula at the Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań, and Dr. Piotr Gerlach at the International Institute of Molecular Mechanisms and Machines of the Polish Academy of Sciences in Warsaw.

They will also become members of the EMBO Young Investigator Network of EMBO winners: Young Investigators, Global Investigators and Installation Grantees. They also have the opportunity to take advantage of an EMBO Member mentoring, covered costs of participation in training or organization of conferences, and have access to research infrastructure at the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) in Heidelberg, Germany.

Funding for the programme comes from the host countries that wish to strengthen the development of life sciences research. To apply for a grant, candidates must spend at least two consecutive years outside the country where they plan to set up their laboratory.

More than 1,8000 scientists are members of European Molecular Biology Organization that promotes scientific excellence in life sciences in Europe and beyond. Its main goals include supporting particularly talented researchers at all stages of their careers, stimulating the exchange of scientific information and building an environment conducive to the achievement of the best possible results by scholars in Europe.
